Continuação direta de “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare”, este novo episódio se distancia definitivamente dos jogos inspirados na 2ª Guerra Mundial. Sob direção da Infinity Ward, a criadora original, o game a princípio chamaria-se apenas “Modern Warfare 2″, mas a alcunha “Call of Duty” foi resgatada a fim de associar mais claramente o título à série.A história de “Modern Warfare 2″ continua alguns anos depois do capítulo anterior. O sargento “Soap” MacTavish não é mais o herói, depois de uma promoção que o levou ao posto de capitão da força aérea. O jogador encarna Gary “Roach” Sanderson, que integra uma força-tarefa multinacional liderada por MacTavish para deter a reconstrução do grupo nacionalista extremo que detonou uma bomba nuclear no último game.
Com cenários que vão desde as montanhas na Rússia até as favelas do Rio de Janeiro, “Modern Warfare 2″ aposta no combate tecnológico, com uso de armas de última geração como sensores térmicos e mísseis teleguiados. Há ainda fases com combates debaixo da água e uma fuga desesperada em snowmobiles, entre outros momentos desenvolvidos para tornar mais diversa a ação em primeira pessoa.
Além da campanha principal, a Infinity Ward apostou nas missões paralelas, com objetivos distintos e que não interferem no desenrolar da trama. Elas estão reunidas no modo “Special Forces”, uma evolução da missão extra contida em “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2″ chamada “Mile High Clube”, passada em um avião. Neste modo, inclusive, há suporte para multiplayer cooperativo.
O componente online também é muito importante. O jogo anterior entrou até mesmo no Guinness Book graças ao ótimo trabalho da equipe em formar uma comunidade sólida, com um sistema de ranking e contínua evolução por meio de atualizações, mapas extras e suporte a modificações. Tudo isso volta com mais novidades, novos papéis e armas, além de alguns pacotes de missões extras disponibilizados inicialmente somente para o console da Microsoft.

Em vídeo liberado pela Activision, ja pode ser notado cenas do Rio de Janeiro (Cristo Redentor e Favela), esta é uma das primeiras fases do jogo, talvez algum integrante brasileiro faça parte da Task Force 141.
